AC Milan eSports Jersey Concept for 2021

  • eSport Jersey AC Milan - Back White

While working at our previous concept for a streetwear hoodie, we’ve started thinking how cool it would be for Serie A teams to embrace the rise of eSports in a full-blown eSerie A championship. This could run in those months when Serie A is on a summer break, extending Serie A yearly coverage while sustaining the interest of those who want to support their favorite team on-the-go. Under this possibility, we’ve been working on a concept for an eSports jersey and – once again – we’ve leverage on the brand identity of the team we know best: AC Milan.

Overview

Esports have been a big deal for quite a while. It’s a massive industry estimated to be worth somewhere in the ballpark of 1.8 billion USD by 2022. It’s attracting the largest audience on the planet, already over 600 million people. Forbes reports that esport pro athletes have been growing more than 40% annually every year since 1998. The LA Times says eight million people log on every day to take part. And yet, for some of us, it still feels somewhat foreign, an underground culture even.

eSports gaming set

With the public health crisis in full swing, we’ve already seen athletes and celebrities hunkered in their living rooms with controllers in hand (Charles Leclerc anyone?), engaging in video games like Assetto Corsa Competizione, NBA 2K20, and of course, FIFA / PES. Those are video games mostly played recreationally, although when the stakes rise and pros and money get involved, they essentially become esports. It’s a galaxy comprised of international tournaments and sponsored teams competing in well-established tournaments like those arranged by the developers/publishers of LOL, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Earlier this year, the Italian football league Serie A TIM have launched their first esports competition – called eSerie A – with the top qualified players having the opportunity to be picked by the top-flight clubs. The new competition, set up in association with sports marketing company Infront, will see players from 20 Italian clubs compete for the inaugural title. Infront will organize the competition along with Italian esports company, PG Esport as well as 15 days’ worth of broadcast production of all events and matches.

Concept

We started by asking ourselves: “Who said that an eSports Jersey has to be 100% identical to the kit used by the main team?”. We should be more daring and try out something different. Next up, we brainstormed about the key elements that compose a videogame. If you think of videogames one of the first thing that comes to your mind are pixels. Especially among those who started playing games in the 1980-1990s.

Inspired by pixel art from old-school videogames, in this AC Milan eSports Jersey Concept for 2021 the essence of the team is represented by the iconic color code: red and black stripes. Only this time the stripes are less “crisp” and defined, just like what you would expect from a videogame of 30 years ago. The same goes for the technical sponsor logo (Puma) and for the crest, which are both pixelated. To infuse an eSports vibe to our design, we’ve accentuated the predominance of white color, which normally appears only in the away kit. Finally, the edges in between the top and the bottom of the jersey hide a homage to Milan famous cathedral, or Duomo di Milano.

Twitch Streetwear Hoodie

SupeRanked 009 Twitch Streetwear Hoodie - Front

Founded in 2011, Twitch is currently the most popular online service to watch and stream content related to games. It originally focused almost entirely on video games, but has since expanded to include streams dedicated to talk shows, craftwork, music, etc. Owned by Amazon since 2014, Twitch has millions daily active users and a very unique identity reinforced by their late-2019 redesign. We’ve been recently working on a concept for a streetwear hoodie inspired by the new logo, and here’s the result.

Overview

The new logo has been released in late 2019. It comes with various, beneficial updates that make it so much better. The main change being the tighter counterspaces of the letters that now also match the thickness of the stroke around the letters. The characters are wider and bolder, creating a more impactful branding. The angled notches on the bottom of the “w”, “t”, and “c” are all now in the same direction, making the logo consistent and balanced.

Concept

Twitch may have begun as a video game streaming service but since then it’s been expanding to offer a variety of live streams aimed to appeal to a broader audience. Some examples are IRL (In Real Life) which features streamers simply chatting live with their viewers, Talk Shows including a mix of live panel discussions, and even professionally produced variety shows. While viewers looking for something more artistic should check out the Creative category. This is where artists, programmers, animators, cosplayers, and designers share their creative process with the world.

We felt that such a widespread and variegated streaming platform deserves a bold design for its merch. We decided to start from a classic streetwear hoodie design and play along with it by leveraging on both brand name and icon.

The results is something that we hope it could strike the attention of both online viewers and real life crowd, thanks to its bold pattern and a combination of colors that it’s rarely found elsewhere when it comes to streetwear.

Sony PlayStation Pattern for iPhone Cover

Sony launched its PlayStation brand back in 1994, followed by four major consoles, all of which have received refreshed designs. If there’s one thing that has never been changing is the iconic triangle-circle-x-square logo. This genius intuition dates back to the very original controller, and since then it has become one of the most iconic graphic elements in the gaming industry. Above all, one of the most flexible. In the year of PS5 we want to pay tribute to this unique logo with a redesigned pattern.

Overview

For years people have pondered the meaning of Sony‘s brand-defining controller face buttons. The Cross (or X) and Circle buttons are simple enough to decipher — the Circle represents “go” or “ok” (as is its use in Japan) and the Cross represents “no” or “cancel”. Meanwhile, Western games have managed to reverse the commands over time.

While said shapes are easy to explain, the Square and Triangle buttons are a less straight-forward. Thankfully, Japanese designer Teiyu Goto – who designed the first three generations of consoles – has revealed all in a recent issue of Famitsu. “Other game companies at the time assigned alphabet letters or colors to the buttons. And so we wanted something simple to remember, which is why we went with icons, and I came up with the triangle-circle-X-square combination and gave each symbol a meaning and a color”, he said. “The triangle refers to viewpoint; I had it represent one’s head or direction and made it green. Square refers to a piece of paper; I had it represent menus or documents and made it pink. The circle and X represent ‘yes’ or ‘no’ decision-making and I made them red and blue respectively. Consequently, people thought those colors were mixed up, and I had to reinforce to management that that’s what I wanted.”

Concept

It’s a fascinating story and we’ve decided to pay tribute with a small concept for a seamless pattern which incorporates the acclaimed logo. As there’s plenty of designs around that leverage already on such set of symbols, we’ve taken a different route and focused on a female-oriented pattern, inspired by Women’s Day PlayStation 4 theme released last year by Sony.

Once decided the direction we would have taken in terms of design, the next step was to test the likability of such pattern in a way that was easily understandable. Therefore, we’ve decided to try it out by implementing it on a tech accessory such as an iPhone case.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Sneakers

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a FPS game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. Serving as a reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series, as well as the sixteenth overall installment in the COD series, it was released on October 25, 2019. This project is a tribute to the long-standing franchise.

Overview

Attempting to reflect the complexities of 2019 warfare is an compelling gambit, but it’s also a gamble. As as mainstream franchise with a reputation for run-n-gun immediate gameplay, this is a tough position from which to start discussing the complexities of war. And we have to say we really appreciate the effort that Infinity Ward & Co. have placed on this title, both in terms of story and technical evolution of the game which clearly steps up on graphics and realism. The game has hooked us for hundreds of hours already, and we’re still amused by the details such as the audio effects and the micro-movements when holding a weapon. That’s why we all agreed to work on a unique fashion item for this game.

Concept

After a couple of hours of brainstorming we decided to focus on a pair of sneakers “COD style”. The design should have been a combination of a military-grade gears together with the utilitarian trend that is taking fashion by storm.

And so our approach to this design was to infuse a few key elements to make these sneakers concept even more meaningful: a breathable and impermeable fabric like those you’ve seen before on Geox shoes, an easy-lock mechanism for the strings, a heavy duty shoe sole able to step on nails and spikes without making a dent, and a heel strap to further improve comfort and grip.

This is our first attempt on a sneaker design and we would love to hear your comments. So please do let us know your thoughts! And if you have your own sneaker design to show to the world, feel free to submit it to us.
